A Reflection on Love and its Ultimate Sustainability ....In the Workplace.

To mark St Valentine’s day, in 2013 the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) encouraged their members to blog about why they loved their jobs, positioning the competition with an added incentive; ‘if you write the best blog you win a year’s free membership’. I was honoured enough to win the competition that was entered by consultants from all walks of life.

Exactly four years later I pondered that this would prove to be a good time for reflection. Wow, so much can happen in 4 meagre years. In the last 1,460 days, our recruitment offering has grown, we have developed a full suite of outsourcing services, rebranded (and that was a bumpy road), built two new websites, became a limited company, added additional service lines and employees, moved office, re-decorated (twice), invested in training schemes… the list goes on. But thorough these changes, the growth, development, challenges, high’s and inevitable low’s, that which I wrote in 2013 remains the same.

I still love recruitment, I love my job! 1,460 mornings (since writing and long before), I have woken up and been happy, really happy to go to work, I am still addicted. Addicted to the ‘high’ of the recruitment ‘buzz drug’, the high that comes from knowing that you have played such an important part in someone’s life, helped to define and structure their career and in doing so have aided a company to secure a talented, hardworking individual.  It is people who make the world go around, not money. And when people are your commodity you should feel honoured they chose you to work with.

In 2013 I wrote:

‘’I Love recruitment because of the diversity of people I meet, everyone I speak to has a story, teaches me something, or inspires me. I get to meet new people every day and consider myself incredibly lucky, it is this that not only gets me out of bed but keeps me burning the midnight oil on a regular basis. I Love that I influence people’s lives  whether I place them or not, I Love that many ‘’candidates’’ are now friends – as are many of my ‘’clients’’. Most of all I love the challenges I face and the difference I can make from a struggling clientwho need’s someone to understand the critical component of a position, to a candidate that want’s more than anything to be listened to instead of being put in a box.’’

And if anything, four years later I am more deeply in love than ever! I still meet amazing and brilliant people, candidates, and clients, every day, I hear their story, they open up to me about their life, their aspirations, challenges, weaknesses. I don’t just meet people, I am privileged enough to really see people. For the trust they place in me, for all that they share and the lessons they teach me I am thankful.
