The Truth About Recruitment! And How It Can Work For You!

Posted on 15/03/17

All too often I hear from my candidates that the agencies they have previously signed up to haven’t taken their needs into account, called them back or really listened to what the candidate is hoping to achieve by changing job or even career. It is a source of frustration for many, just how do you select a consultant that you know is going to be right for you? A Consultant that won’t pigeon-hole you to suit their needs.

Firstly, there is a common misconception that needs to be remedied; Professional recruiters work for the clients, not the candidates, this seems a little erroneous, after all every consultancy markets themselves as a company that understands their candidates’ requirements yet few of those recruiters will work outside of their registered positions. As a candidate you are likely to only see positions that already exist on the consultants books, it is, after all, these vacant positions the consultant is trying to fill. It is matchmaking in its most traditional form. And wrong so very wrong!

Let me begin; The first quality you need to be a truly effective recruiter is the ability to create opportunity for both your clients and candidates, the best recruiters will, for their candidates, create roles within companies and seek, attract, or headhunt talent for their clients, next is honesty, if you didn’t hear back from that agency it is because they couldn’t help you or didn’t understand you but weren’t honest enough to tell you. I speak to many potential candidates every day but do not work with all of them, if I feel the candidate and I are not a good match, I pass and recommend another agency better placed to work with them. There are many reasons I will refrain from working with a particular candidate, if they are already working with numerous other consultancies, I won’t waste my time because it signals to me that the candidate is only interested in finding another job, not that they want the RIGHT job, if a candidate is jumping ship purely for monetary reasons I say thanks, but no thanks. Why? Because in order to be the most effective recruiter I can be the Candidate and I need to have a common goal. When placing candidates my goal is to achieve and offer a prospect that presents a genuine opportunity for the candidates’ advancement, professional and personal development. By following this ethos I can guarantee that my clients are acquiring from me truly talented people that can add tangible value to their business by the addition of my candidates skill set and knowledge.

A reputable recruiter can add a great amount of value to your job search, and will work tirelessly to source you the right opportunity in the right company whilst adding value to their clients. To get the most from your recruiter you need to understand what they expect and how to work with them, it is after all a partnership! So first and foremost be honest, the base of any good relationship is trust. Listen, if your recruiter is good they will know your market well, your recruiter is also your advisor, use them.

Be Loyal and have a clear idea of what you want, this does not mean your requirements need to be black and white and non-negotiable but if a candidate pitches up on my doorstep, is registered with 7 other agencies and just wants a job, any job I would quickly hand them back
their CV, wish them luck in their search and I wouldn’t think twice about it. You need to tell your recruiter where you want your ideal destination to be, much like a pilot we will find a way to get you there and discuss with you any potential turbulence but we need to know where
we’re flying to! Finally, remember the recruiter/candidate relationship should be two way so keep them in the loop; communicate any changes that affect your job search and most of all trust your recruiters’ judgement.
